The Department of Film and Media at Stamford University offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Arts program of practical, historical and critical courses. Many of the courses concentrate on today's systems of mass communication, information and entertainment, but they approach cinema and television, fiction and documentaries, advertising and experimental film, in the historical context that makes them possible. These historical and critical studies are combined with production courses in film, video and multimedia, on the premise that graduates should be versed in both the contexts and techniques of the art.
Contemporary culture is dominated by film, television, video, and related media. They provide entertainment, convey information, and attempt to persuade us in belief and action. FILM 110 is an introduction to the study of these media and their effects on us. It is both a foundation for further courses in Film and Media and an elective of interest to students in other programs. The course deals with Hollywood movies past and present; Canadian film, television, and video; international cinema and media; narrative, experimental, and documentary forms. It goes behind the images to the institutions that produce them, in order to show why and how the consumption of images has become a defining characteristic of contemporary culture.
